REVIEW ON AYURVEDIC MEDICINAL PLANTS USED IN THE MANAGEMENT OF HYPERTENSION

ABSTRACT Background: Hypertension, a potential risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, is burdening the population of India. Medicinal plants have been crucial in maintaining human health since ancient times. Materials and Methods: A search was made through Electronic databases like Google Scholar, Pubmed, Ayush Research Portal, Dhara using keywords from 2017 to 2024 for Medicinal plants used in Hypertension. Among the eighty articles obtained, the review considered only twenty full text relevant articles. Results: A tabular arrangement shows fifteen medicinal plants from thirteen families with references from the Ayurvedic classics. The table contains scientific names, Sanskrit, vernacular names, parts used, dosage forms, mode of action, active ingredients, and action pathways with supporting references. There was one plant from each of the eleven families and two from Asteraceae and Zingiberacea. Discussion and Conclusion: In particular, three plants, Rauwolfia serpentina(L.) Benth. ex Kurz,Curcuma longa L., and Allium sativum L., have been extensively studied for their antihypertensive effects. The review provides insights for comparing the actions of similar medicinal plants in Ayurveda for their antihypertensive potential.
