ABSTRACT

Background: The immune system, a vital network of cells, molecules, and organs, defends the body against infections and diseases. However, when dysregulated, it can lead to autoimmune disorders, immunodeficiencies, and malignancies. Advances in immunology have led to significant advancements in immunotherapy, revolutionizing disease treatment. Aim: This paper aims to explore the immune system’s critical role in health and disease, examining both the mechanisms by which it protects the body and the consequences when it malfunctions. The study investigates the current understanding of immune system dysregulation in autoimmune diseases, immunodeficiencies, and cancer, and highlights the advancements in immunotherapy as promising therapeutic strategies. Methods: A literature review was conducted to analyze current research on theimmune system's functions, disease involvement, and immunological therapies. Methodologies reviewed included immune assays, immunological profiling, and therapeutic interventions like monoclonal antibodies, vaccines, and immune checkpoint inhibitors. Results: The study highlights the intricate link between immune system function and disease. The immune system's ability to differentiate between self and non-self is crucial for preventing autoimmune reactions and infections. Disrupting this balance can lead to autoimmune diseases, immunodeficiencies, and cancer. Advancements in immunotherapy, including cancer immunotherapy, vaccines, and immunomodulation, have shown promising results. Conclusion: The immune system is crucial for health and disease defense, and understanding its molecular mechanisms can lead to new therapeutic interventions. Future research should focus on improving immunotherapies' efficacy and precision, particularly in personalized medicine, to transform disease treatment.
