ROLE OF CLINICAL PHARMACIST AND IMPACT OF PARAQUAT ON RESPIRATORY AND RENAL IMPAIRMENT
Chintala Lakshmi Sindhura*, Mythili Sivakumar and Rodda Lokanath
ABSTRACT Self-poisoning with herbicides is the main reason for hospital admission and death in Asia. Paraquat is one of the major herbicides that leads to death. Ingestion of paraquat causes toxic chemical reactions to occur throughout the body mainly affecting the lungs, liver and kidneys. When paraquat is ingested or comes into contact with the respiratory system, it can cause pulmonary toxicity, leading to a condition known as paraquat lung or paraquat poisoning. There is no specific antidote for paraquat poisoning, and treatment primarily focuses on supportive care and managing symptoms. Clinical pharmacists play a crucial role in the management of paraquat poisoning, particularly in addressing its impact on renal and respiratory impairment. Keywords: Paraquat, 1,1-dimethyl-4,4-bipyridylium dichloride, Self-poisoning. [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
