Abstract

PHARMACOGNOSTICAL ANALYTICAL AND IN-VITRO EVALUATION OF NEELINI MOOLA (INDIGOFERA TINCTORIA LINN.) WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO ITS ACTION ON BACTERIA CAUSING DENTAL CARIES (KRIMIDANTA)

ABSTRACT

Antibiotic resistant microorganisms create a need for a new antibacterial drug as it causes difficulty or impossible to treat infections. There comes the importance of antimicrobial herbal drugs, these can be used as an alternative of antibiotics. Ayurveda explains Krimighna action for many plants this can be compared with antimicrobial action. Neelini is a drug which is botanically identified as Indigofera tinctoria Linn. belongs to the family Fabaceae. Many references regarding Krimighna action of Neelini is available in Ayurvedic classics. Neelini is explained as a drug of choice for the treatment of Krimidanta. It is one among the eight diseases of the teeth. On the basis of clinical features this can be compared with Dental caries which is one of the major problem in dentistry. Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus fermentum are the commonbacteria which cause dental caries. The present study aims at antimicrobial activity of the drug Neelini against Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus fermentum.
