Abstract

COMPARATIVE PHARMACOGNOSTICAL, ANALYTICAL AND IN VITRO EVALUATION OF SHEPHALI MOOLA (VITEX NEGUNDO LINN.) AND (NYCTANTHES ARBORTRISTIS LINN.) WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO ITS ACTION ON BACTERIA CAUSING GALASHUNDI (UVULITIS)

ABSTRACT

Ayurveda, one among the oldest medical system, the term itself taking us many years back. Natural remedies using herbal and mineral medicines (Rasoushadhis) are the main treatment plan in ayurveda. Nowadays antibiotics are using tremendously in each and every simple diseases, this making bacteria to become antibiotics resistance. Thus introducing a herbal remedy for the treatment of bacterial disease is important. Most of us are familiar with the bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes, causing pyogenic infection like tonsillitis, uvulitis, epiglottitis and other upper respiratory tract infections. In Ayurveda Galashundi can be correlated with Uvulitis. Symptoms of both the diseases are similar including pain, difficuly in swallowing and breathing, cough etc. Chakrapani mentioned Shephali moola charvana for the treatment of Galashundi. Shephali is mentioned for both Nirgundi (Vitex negundo Linn.) of Verbenaceae family and Parijata(Nyctanthes arbortristis Linn.) from Oleaceae family, by different Acharyas. Krimighna action of both drugs are mentioned in Ayurvedic classics. Thus this study lit up towards the antibacterial activity of both the drugs.
