Abstract

ACUTE TOXICITY OF SAARANAI CHOORANAM FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF RATHTHA KOTHIPPU (SYSTEMIC HYPERTENSION)

ABSTRACT

Siddha system of medicine specially on Herbo minerals for the treatment of all diseases, which was practiced at village levels and now become important medicine and one of the traditional medicines in worldwide also it has less side effects. The trial drug has been mentioned in siddha literature of “Agasthiyar erandayiram – Part-III” for the management of Raththa kothippu (Systemic hypertension). Primary objective of study to evaluate the acute toxicity and clinical efficacy of Saaranai Chooranam in the treatment of Raththa kothippu as followed OECD Guidelines 423. This Observational in vivo study carried out Arulmigu Kalasalingam College of Pharmacy, Tamil Nādu, India. The trial drug contains equal ratio of Saaranai Root and Inthuppu, with adjuvant Ghee or Jagarry. In this study female Wistar albino rats were used on acute toxicity study, it divided into 5 groups, 3 animals are having in each group, the test drug Saaranai chooranam was administered single dose at 5 mg/kg, 50 mg/kg, 300 mg/kg, 1000 mg/kg, 2000 mg/kg body weight of animal for period of 14 days. Observed all symptoms including Alertness, Grooming, Touch response, Torch response, Pain response, Tremors, Convulsion, Righting reflex, Gripping strength, Pinna locomotion, Urination, Salivation, Lacrimation, Hyperactivity, Convulsions, behavioral changes and mortality. In here no mortality and morbidity observed, single dose oral administration at all selected dose levels of the Saaranai Chooranam, The animals don’t behave any abnormal reactions and don’t change in the general appearances, gait and posture, reactivity to handling sensory stimuli, grip strength also normal. It also indicating the p value is less than 0.05. In this study functional and hematological parameters were observed. Therefore, I concluded there is no acute toxicity in Saaranai chooranam and establishes the safety of the drug for long term administration for Raththa kothippu (Systemic hypertension).
