Liji C. J.*, Nafees K. Ismail, Hemna Vinoj and Ashbin Antony
ABSTRACT Respiratory viral infections, including COVID-19, influenza, and other viruses, pose a significant threat to older adults, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality. Age-related immune decline, comorbidities, and chronic health conditions exacerbate the severity of these infections. COVID-19 has highlighted the global burden of respiratory viral infections, with older adults facing higher risks of severe illness, prolonged recovery, and mortality. This review examines the impact of respiratory viral infections on older adults, exploring immunosenescence, clinical presentation, complications, prevention, and treatment strategies. Understanding these factors informs healthcare professionals, policymakers, and researchers to mitigate the impact of respiratory viral infections on vulnerable populations. Keywords: Respiratory viral infections, older adults, COVID-19, influenza, immunosenescence, morbidity, mortality. [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
