Komal Gayakwad*, P. K. Rawal and Pallavi Kodage

ABSTRACT

Ayurveda the indigenous system of Indian medicine defines the life in very meticulous manner from formation of Garbha (Embryo) till death. Ayurveda works both preventive as well as curative aspect. For the formation of heathy progeny prevention is taken from the period of conception till the delivery. The process of life begins from the period of conception. This marks the hallmark of beginning of new human life. Conception is a complex biological process which depends upon variety of factors. For the formation healthy progeny needs healthy Ritu (Period of conception), Kshetra (Uterus), Ambu (Nutritional factor), Beeja (Healthy sperm and ovum) and for the delivery of healthy child need suitable environment throughout intra-uterine period. Factors which affect the process of conception and intra uterine environment comes under teratogens. Teratogenic defect is an important public health concern as these conditions can have lifelong impacts on affected individuals and their families. About 4 % to 5% of birth defects are caused by exposure to teratogens. So, it is important to avoid teratogens throughout pregnancy.[1] In Ayurveda teratology is explained under the heading Garbha vikruti vidnyan and Garbha upaghatkara bhava’s.[2] So here is an attempt to put some light on teratogenesis explained by acharyas in Ayurveda and their principles. Ayurveda offers a healthy guideline for maintaining a healthy pregnancy and promotes the healthy development of fetus.
