Abstract

COMPREHENSIVE SEPSIS MANAGEMENT IN ACUTE CARE SETTINGS: INTEGRATING NURSING, MEDICAL RECORDS, PHARMACY, EMERGENCY MEDICINE, AND CARDIOVASCULAR CARE

ABSTRACT

Background: The practice of pharmacy in emergency medicine (EM) has been established for over thirty years, with significant growth noted in recent years. The presence of specialized emergency pharmacists or clinical pharmacists within Emergency Departments (ED) has become more common, marking a shift in the perception and role of pharmacists in emergency care. Aim of Work: This article aims to provide an overview of the historical background and fundamental principles of EM pharmacy practice, while also emphasizing the well-established advantages of incorporating an EM pharmacist into the healthcare team. Methods: The article discusses various EM pharmacy practices across different healthcare systems,analyzing the roles and responsibilities of EM pharmacists and exploring new approaches that have been implemented within the field over the last decade. Results: The integration of EM pharmacists has been shown to enhance patient outcomes, improve medication management, reduce medication errors, and contribute to more efficient emergency care processes. Key benefits associated with EM pharmacy practice include increased accessibility to pharmaceutical care and improved collaboration within the healthcare team. Conclusion: The role of the EM pharmacist is increasingly recognized as a vital component of the healthcare team in the emergency setting. The continued evolution and integration of pharmacy services in emergency medicine promise to improve patient care and safety.
