Abstract

UTERINE FIBROIDS AND AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE: A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW

Nikita Mahesh Magennavar*, Sukanya Patil, Pallavi Kodage

ABSTRACT

Uterine fibroids (leiomyomas) are common benign tumors affectingwomen of reproductive age, often associated with hormonalimbalances, particularly elevated estrogen levels. Symptoms rangefrom being asymptomatic to experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and reproductive complications. In Ayurveda, uterinefibroids are conceptually similar to "Granthi" which refers to abnormalgrowths caused by the imbalance of Doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha)and the accumulation of Ama. This review explores both the modernmedical understanding of uterine fibroids and the Ayurvedicperspective on Granthi. Ayurvedic management involves herbalremedies such as Ashoka (Saraca asoca), Shatavari (Asparagusracemosus), Guggulu (Commiphora mukul), and Kanchanar (Bauhiniavariegata), along with detoxification procedures like Panchakarmaand dietary and lifestyle modifications to balance the doshas andremove toxins. Modern medical treatments include hormonal therapies,non-invasive procedures like uterine artery embolization, and surgical options likemyomectomy and hysterectomy. The article concludes that an integrative approachcombining Ayurvedic treatments with modern medical therapies can offer a comprehensivesolution for managing uterine fibroids, addressing both symptom relief and underlyingcauses.
