A REVIEW OF MEDICINAL IMPORTANCE OF DHANYAKA (CORIANDER SATIVUM) IN BHAISHAJYA RATNAVALI

ABSTRACT The drug Dhanyaka (Coriander sativum L.) belongs to family Apiaceae and it has medicinal as well as nutritional values. It is one of the important Indian cuisine for preparing food stuffs which enhance flavor and palatability. This medicinal plant is especially used for its carminative property. Dhanyaka has tikta, kashaya, katu, madhura rasa. Its Vipaka is Madhura (Sweet) and Virya (Potency) is Sheeta. The plant possess pharmacological actions such as thermogenic, anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic, stomachic, carminative, digestive, appetizer, diuretic, antipyretic, stimulant. Whole plant and fruits are used for medicinal purpose. Due to its immense therapeutic properties it has been used in many traditional formulations described for the treatment of several diseases. The focus of this review of Dhanyaka from Bhaishajya Ratnavali is to highlight its importance in various diseases. In this article we will emphasize on its inclusion in a varietyof formulaions described in Bhaishajya Ratnavali which is an important Ayurvedic text.
