Abstract

A CASE STUDY ON AMAVATA (RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS)

Aysha*, Sanjay Kumar Tripathi, O. P. Singh and Shweta Shukla

ABSTRACT

Amavata is a disease caused by the vitiation of Vata associated with Ama. When vitiated Vata takes up shelter in the Shleshma sthanas and circulates Ama throughout the body through Dhamanies, it manifests as lame symptoms including stiffness, oedema, and tenderness in both small and large joints. Amavata is a specific disease that falls within the Vata Kaphaja diseases category and has been mentioned in Ayurveda from Madhavkara's time (16th century A.D.). The Nidanas of Amavata as told by Madhavkara are Viruddha ahara, exercise following Snigdha ahara, Mandagni and Viruddha chesta, etc. Because of its morbidity, comorbidities, and chronicity, Amavata is one of the most difficult diseases for clinicians to treat. Although the allopathic treatment relieves symptoms, the underlying illness is left untreated because there is no effective therapy. This leads to a number of side effects, toxic symptoms, unpleasant responses and more significant problems. The treatment procedure described in ayurveda are Langhana, Swedana, use of Tikta-katu Dravya’s, Deepana, Virechana, Basti etc.

Keywords: Amavata, Ama, Vata, Kapha.
