LITERATURE REVIEW OF DHATAKI (WOODFORDIA FRUTICOSA L.KURZ) W.S.R. TO BRIHATRAYI AND NIGHANTU

ABSTRACT Dhataki, an important Ayurvedic herb which is also called as Woodfordia fruticosa belongs to family Lythraceae. It is commonly called as Dhaaya in local language in India and Fire Flame Bush in English. Dhataki Flowers inherit great theraputic value as they are used in diseases like dysentery, healing wound, diarrhea, leucorrhoea, menorrhagia etc. Apart for that, it is used as major component in formation of aasvas and arishtas and work as fermentation in preparations. It also has got some important pharmacological properties like antimicrobial, antiviral, antioxidant, hepato-protective activity etc. As per Acharya Sushruta, kwatha of flowers of Dhataki are used in treatment of dysentery, ulcers and fever. In this review article, detailed literature review of Dhataki as per Brihatrayi and Nighantus have been discussed which also focuses on properties, therapeutic uses and various formulations in which Dhataki is used as component.
