DIGITAL PATHOLOGY – A REVIEW
Fasih Ahmad*, Arifa Khatoon, Mohammad Naime, Mahboobus Salam, Ehsan Rauf,
ABSTRACT Digital pathology is a modern approach to traditional pathology.Digital pathology is a sub-field of pathology that focuses on datamanagement based on information generated from digitized specimenslides. Through the use of computer-based technology, digitalpathology utilizes virtual microscopy. Glass slides are converted intodigital slides that can be viewed, managed, shared and analysed on acomputer monitor. With the practice of whole-slide imaging (WSI),which is another name for virtual microscopy, the field of digitalpathology is growing and has applications in diagnostic medicine, withthe goal of achieving efficient and cheaper diagnoses, prognosis, andprediction of diseases due to the success in machine learningand artificial intelligence in healthcare. Whole slide imaging, imageanalysis software, and telepathology platforms enable remoteconsultations, second opinions, and data analysis. Digital pathologyimproves diagnostic accuracy, enhances collaboration, and increasesaccess to healthcare services, particularly in remote areas. It alsosupports pharmaceutical research, education, and data-driven decisionmaking, transforming the field of pathology and patient care.
