A REVIEW ON MUCOADHESIVE PROPERTY OF BETEL LEAF EXTRACT FOR ULCER TREATMENT

ABSTRACT Betel leaf extract has been investigated for its potential in treatingulcers due to its mucoadhesive properties. The study evaluated themucoadhesive strength and ulcer healing efficacy of betel leaf extract.The extract showed significant mucoadhesive strength, with a wash-offtime of 12 hours. In vivo studies on ulcer-induced rats demonstratedfaster healing in the treated group, with a 90% healing rate within 14days, compared to the control group. The mucoadhesive property ofbetel leaf extract allows for sustained release and localized delivery ofactive compounds, promoting ulcer healing. Histopathologicalexamination revealed increased collagen synthesis and tissueregeneration in the treated group. The findings suggest that betel leafextract is a promising natural remedy for ulcer treatment, offering anovel approach to wound healing. Further studies can optimize theformulation and explore its potential in clinical applications.
