Daniya Fatima Riha* and Syeda Rana Nikhat
ABSTRACT Dosage form is a means through which the medication is administered to enhance its efficacy and minimize side effects. Its use is thoroughly classified by many authors but its implementation may present with some challenges. This study aims to dive in detail about different dosage form use, their effectiveness and complications at tertiary care teaching hospitals. This was a dual centred prospective observational study conducted for 6 months with a sample size 50. Microsoft excel and word were used to interpret data in graphs and tables. Numerical and percentages were the data presenting tools. From a total of 50 cases with 25(50%) women and 25(50%) men. The preferred dosage forms observed in age groups 0-16 years and 17-37 years was per oral and for individuals of 80-100 years intravenous dosage form was the choice. The dosage form highly used in inpatients was oral with IV being close second similarly for outpatients per oral was the leading prescription. Alcoholic patients had an increased prescribing of IVdosage form. A total of 35% of intravenous prescriptions were converted to oral form. The dosage form with highest complications was IV which were swelling, pain and bruising. Per oral complications were identified as acidity and nausea. A list of incorrect use of dosage form was identified. Around 30% of population had incorrect information on dosage form use. This study conveys the observed dosage form use according to age, addiction and department. Proper patient counselling must be implemented to prevent such errors.
