PHARMACOGNOSTICAL AND PHYTOCHEMICAL EVALUATION OF BIJAKA (PTEROCARPUS MARSUPIUM ROXB.) LEAF

ABSTRACT Background: The present article reveals the Pharmacognocy and Phytochemical study of Bijaka (Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb.) leaf. Material & Method: Pharmacognostical studies and Phytochemical studies were carried out to supplement the necessary information for the systematic identification and authentication of this plant. Observation & Result: Leaves are compound and imparipinnate. Leaflets are five to seven in number, 8–14 cm long, coriaceous, oblong, with 15– 20 pairs of lateral veins. In microscopic studies the presence of well-defined upper and lower epidermis covered externally with thick cuticle, lower surface of enriched with trichomes and oil cavities are found. The powder microscopy studies showed presence of closed stomata, long fiber, long pitted vessel and glandular trichomes. Preliminary phytochemical screening showed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, and steroids. Conclusion: The structures which areobserved here, helps in correct identification of Bijaka (Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb.) leaf.
