CENTELLA ASIATICA: A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF ITS TRADITIONAL USES AND MODERN THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL

Harsh Mahesh Kashid*, Prajakta Navnath Ghuge and Divya Raosaheb Jadhav

ABSTRACT

Centella Asiatica is a herb with a long history in traditional medicine that has been valued for more than 3,000 years for its medicinal properties in many different cultures. Known as "Ji Xue Cao" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and "Mandukaparni" in Ayurveda, this herb is prized for its ability to heal wounds and reduce inflammation. Centella Asiatica has long been used to treat psoriasis and dermatitis as well as to boost memory and cognitive abilities. Because tigers use the plant to heal their wounds, it is known by the nickname "tiger grass," which emphasizes its important role in wound healing. These advantages are attributed by contemporary research to the rich phytochemical content of Centella Asiatica, specifically to its triterpenoids, flavonoids, polyphenols, amino acids, and phytosterols. Triterpenoids, such as madecassoside and asiaticoside, are essential for increasing the production of collagen, hastening the healing of wounds, and lowering inflammation. By providing antioxidant defense, the flavonoids and polyphenols lessen the consequences of aging and environmental damage. Additionally, the phytosterols and amino acids improve the resilience, barrier performance, and hydration of the skin. Centella Asiatica is an important component of anti-aging, calming, and moisturizing skincare products in today's market. It is prized for its capacity to firm skin, minimize wrinkles, and treat acne. Its prominence in both conventional and contemporary dermatological practices is further supported by scientific research that demonstrate its potential in wound healing, anti-inflammation, and scar control, further validating its efficacy.
