ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of our study was to check the effect of methanolic extract of Alpinia calcarata Roscoe leaves in memory impaired rats. Methods: In the present study, the effectiveness of methanolic extract of Alpinia calcarata Roscoe (MEACR) leaves was evaluated against scopolamine induced Alzheimer in rats. The dose of 200 mg/kg of MEACR and 400 mg/kg of MEACR was selected for the study. The daily dose of scopolamine 2 mg/kg was selected for producing memory impairment in rats. The standard drug donepezil at a dose of 5 mg/kg was used for present study. Results: From present finding, we found that dose of 200 mg/kg of MEACR and 400 mg/kg of MEACR leaves prevents loss of memory in rats and decreases the level of acetylthiocholine (AchE) level in treatment groups. The phytochemicals present in MEACR leaves shows the presence ofalkaloids, carbohydrates, tannins, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, anthraquinones, saponins. Conclusion: The present study indicates that MEACR leaves (200 mg/kg) exhibits significant mild to moderate learning and memory enhancing activity and MEACR leaves 400 mg/kg showed significant improvement in learning and memory and memory enhancing activity in rats. We can conclude that Alpinia calcarata Roscoe leaves extract can be utilised for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Keywords: Alpinia calcarata Roscoe, Scopolamine, Alzheimer’s Disease, Memory impairment, Acetylcholinesterase. [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
