Rutuja Ajit Ingale*, Ramesh Ujwale and Nitesh R. Joshi
ABSTRACT Introduction: Fasting is a popular health practice, rooted in Ayurveda's wisdom: "Langhanam Param Aushadham" (Fasting as the supreme medicine). However, many fasting diets rely on calorie-rich, high-glycemic foods, exacerbating health issues. This study explores Barnyard Millet, also known as 'Shyamak,' as a nutritious fasting alternative to common fasting staples like potatoes, sweet potatoes, and sago which are high in starch, carbohydrates and calories. Methods and Materials: This study investigates the inclusion of Barnyard Millet in fasting diets, drawing from Ayurvedic literature, internet sources, articles, and scientific journals. It also recommends some fasting recipes. Results: Barnyard Millet, with its low- calorie content and favourable glycaemic index, benefits those dealing with obesity, diabetes, and high lipid profiles. Discussion: This research highlights the potential of health-conscious Barnyard Millet recipes to bridge the gap between fasting traditions and modern health concerns, offering a nutrient-rich ally for health-conscious fasting.
