Abstract

PELVIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASE – AN AYURVEDIC APPROACH

Dr. Udayakala P.*

ABSTRACT

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is one of the most serious gynecological disorders faced by women in present era. This condition creates severe alignments in personal as well as social life of women. Even though direct references are not available in our classics Acharyas mentioned this condition under Yonivyapad.[2,3,4] It includes the set of disorders that usually occurs in the reproductive life of women. PID is a spectrum of diseases in which the ascending spread of the micro organisms occurs from vagina and cervix to the upper genital tract organs mainly Endometrium, Fallopian tubes, Ovaries and surrounding structures which results in the inflammatory condition of genital tract.[1] In Ayurvedic classics conditions characterized with inflammation i.e., Pittala Yonivyapad, Paripluta Yonivyapad, Vipluta Yonivyapad are mentioned. Mithyachara, use of Apadravya’s and also the Jathaharini are the main cause for this. PID is characterized by the symptoms of Dyspareunia, Lower abdominal pain, lowback pain,
abnormal and Purulent Vaginal discharge, Pyrexia etc. Similar symptoms are mentioned by our Acharya’s in above said conditions like Jwara, daha, Pooyayukta yonisrava, Gramyadharme ruja, Arti etc. Early diagnosis and proper management is important as delay in the treatment can lead to the complications like Vandytwa, Asrugdhara, Arsha and Gulma. Treatment is mainly based on the predominance of the Dosha. Good results are obtained from our OPD with the medications like Pushyanuga Churna, ChandraprabhaVati, Musalikhadiradi kashaya, chandanasava, Patrangasava and also Yoniprakshalana with Panchavalkala Qwatha.

Keywords: Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, Pittala Yonivyapad, Paripluta Yonivyapad.
