Abstract

PANDU ROGA CHIKITSA: ANCIENT INSIGHTS AND MODERN APPROACHES

Dr. Ameya Gune*, Dr. Indrajeet S. Gadge and Dr. Pramod A. Hase

ABSTRACT

Pandu Roga (Anemia) is a common condition that affects individuals of all ages, characterized by a deficiency in red blood cells or hemoglobin. In Ayurveda, the treatment of Pandu Roga is based on three general principles: Daivavyapashraya (divine therapy), Yuktivyapashraya (rational therapy), and Satvavajaya (psychological therapy). Among these, Yuktivyapashraya Chikitsa (rational therapy) is emphasized for Pandu Roga, which includes both purification (Shodhana) and palliative (Shamana) treatments. The treatment regimen for Pandu Roga involves avoiding causative factors such as pungent, sour, hot, and sharp foods, and engaging in appropriate physical activities. Shodhana Karma (purification therapy) is recommended, which includes emesis (Vamana), purgation (Virechana), and enema (Basti) therapies. Specific medications are used based on the predominant Dosha involved in the disease. The diet
and regimen (Pathya) for Pandu Roga include the consumption of aged rice, barley, wheat, green gram, and forest animal meat, while avoiding foods that aggravate the condition (Apathya). Various herbal formulations are also prescribed for the treatment of Pandu Roga, along with specific adjuvants (Anupana) to enhance their efficacy. In conclusion, the treatment of Pandu Roga in Ayurveda is a holistic approach that aims to balance the Doshas, cleanse the body of toxins, and nourish the tissues. By following these guidelines, individuals can effectively manage and treat Pandu Roga while maintaining overall health and well-being.
