AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF DIABETIC POLY NEUROPATHY W.S.R MADHUMEHAJANYA UPDRAVA– A CASE REPORT

ABSTRACT Diabetic Neuropathies are a heterogenous group of pathologicalmanifestations with the potential to affect every organ, with clinicalimplications such as organ dysfunction, which leads to low quality life& increased morbidity. Diabetic neuropathy is one of the commonmicrovascular complications affecting the majority diabetic populationworldwide. DPN is characterized by degenerative neuronal loss due toalterations in nerve damage and repair process which results inprogressive loss of sensation. The prevalence of Diabetic PeripheralNeuropathy (DPN) ranges from 16 to 87% with painful diabetesrelatedneuropathy about 26%.[1] Diabetic Neuropathy is damage toautonomic, motor and sensory nerves that results from metabolic orvascular derangements in patients with long standing DiabetesMellitus. A 46 years male patient who was diagnosed with DPN wastreated successfully with a combination of Ayurvedic oral medicationand Panchakarma therapies. Considering the treatment protocol ofPrameha Upadrava and Vatavyadhi Chikitsa. This article highlights the potential ofAyurveda in the management of Sensory and Motor symptoms of DPN in a case wheresatisfactory treatment modalities are not available in Allopathic medical system. Assessmentof the patient was done before & after treatment using the Tornoto Clinical Neuropathic Score system. Significant improvement was seen in all the scores after the treatment. Thiscase highlights the importance of the stage-wise selection of drugs and external therapiesshows that DPN can be successfully managed by these therapies.
