ABSTRACT

The prevalence of myocardial infarction as the leading cause of death worldwide is a public health challenge. Myocardial infarction is characterized by the manifestation of myocardial cell necrosis due to fundamental and sustained ischaemia. This present study evaluated the effect of methanol fraction of Ipomoea batatas leaf (MFIBL) on some cardiac function biomarkers in isoprenaline-induced myocardial infarction in albino rats. Twenty (20) albino rats were used for the study and randomly divided into five (5) groups of four rats per group. Group 1 served as the normal control, group 2 was the negative control (administered 85mg/kg of isoprenaline only), group 3 served as the positive control (treated with 2mg/kg carvedilol for 7 days), groups 4 and 5 were treated with 200 and 400 mg/kg MFIBL respectively, for 7 days. Myocardial infarction was induced in the rats using subcutaneous injection of 85mg/kg isoprenaline (ISO) for two consecutive days at 24 hours intervals. The result showed that isoprenaline effectively induced myocardial infarction in rats, reflected by the significant (p<0.05) increases, in the negative control group, of the biomarkers (Creatine Kinase-MB activity, Troponin I activity, Lactate Dehydrogenase acitivity, relative to the normal control. Isoprenaline eqaually induced dislipidemia in rats, reflected by the significant (p<0.05) increases, in the negative control group, of the measured biomarkers (TAG, cholesterol), relative to the normal control and significant (p<0.05) decreases in HDL concentration. The fraction significantly (p<0.05) decrease CK-MB activity, Troponin I activity, LDH activity, TAG and cholesterol and significantly (p<0.05) increases HDL. This study suggested that the MFIBL could useful in the management of dyslipidemia and heart attack.
