ABSTRACT
Peripheral neuropathy is an inflammation and degeneration of the peripheral nerves and/or the cranial nerves resulting in impairment of the conductivity of these nerves that typically results in numbness, tingling, muscle weakness and pain in the affected area. Peripheral neuropathy is a very common disorder. In epidemiological studies from India from various regions the overall prevalence of Peripheral Neuropathy varied from 5 to 2400 per 10,000 population. One of the most common causes of peripheral neuropathy is Diabetes mellitus and it its prevalence is estimated between 6%-51% among adults with diabetes depending on age, duration of diabetes and glucose control. Neuropathy in Ayurveda is all about Vata dosha. It can manifest as Kevala vatavyadhi or Vata samsarga with pitta & kapha or Avarana janya vata vyadhi. The symptoms of neuropathy in Ayurveda include Suptata or Daha or both. Suptata manifest as a Lakshana of Vata samsarga with kapha, where as Daha manifest as a Lakshana of Vata samsarga with Pitta. Based on the Samsarga and Sannipata of Dosha’s the Chikitsa are planned accordingly. After the removal of the Avarana or Samsarga, the kevala vata chikitsa is done to normalize the vitiated Vata. In conventional medicine, the treatment aims at treating the underlying cause and symptomatic management includes Analgesics, Anti-seizure medications, Anti- depressants and Topical applications. All these drugs have their own side effects and therefore it is a need of hour to find out effective and safer Ayurveda treatment. Hence an attempt is made to analyze the symptoms of Neuropathy in Ayurveda through Doshik involvement and suitable treatment modalities are explained accordingly.
