Abstract

A THOROUGH REVIEW OF BHARANGI FROM NIGHANTU

ABSTRACT

Background: Bharangi is very important drug described in various classical text of Ayurveda. It is mainly indicated in Shwasa and Kasa Roga. Material & Method: All the available Ayurvedic Nighantus were referred for the collection of data regarding Bharangi. There is description available on synonyms, properties and actions of the drugs. Observation & Result: The different synonyms of Bharangi like Bhargi, Bharangi, Phanji, Padma, Parvani etc. Properties like Tikta, Katu, Kashaya Rasa, Laghu, Ruksha Guna, Ushna Veerya, Katu Vipaka Kaphavatahara Karma and actions like Deepana, Pachana & Ruchya were described in different Nighantu. Discussion: Present review study reveals that from different 24 Nighantus total 78 synonyms are observed and most of the synonyms are indicating morphological characteristics of the plant. Bharangi (Clerodendrum serratum (Linn) Moon) performs several actions and can play an important role in the treatment of Shwasa, Kasa etc. diseased conditions. Conclusion: The present analysis shows that different types of synonyms, properties and functions described in different periods of Ayurvedic Nighantu can be used to identify and validate medicinal plants.
