ABSTRACT

An essential physiological phenomenon for preserving a woman's health during her reproductive years is a normal menstrual cycle. Menstrual irregularities are becoming the primary causes of gynaecological consultations over the world due to faulty dietary practises and a sedentary lifestyle. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which affects one in every forty women, is one of the menstrual disorders and is characterised by oligo/amenorrhea, hirsutism, obesity, enlarged ovaries with a lot of small cysts, and a thick tunica, which causes anovulation. The strong symptom equality between the two makes it comparable to Artava Kshaya in Ayurveda. Only hormonal treatments are employed as therapy techniques nowadays; however, they only provide temporary symptom relief. Ayurvedic treatment known as Panchakarma offers hope for this condition. Shatapushpa Taila, when utilised in the forms of Nasya,
Snehapaana, Abhyanga, and Basti, has been described by Acharya Kashyapa as having a crucial function to play in menstruation abnormalities. Hence, with the aim of identifying and establishing an alternative, safer, effective and long-lasting treatment modality, the study entitled “Comparative Clinical Evaluation of Shatapushpa Taila Nasya and Matra Basti in polycystic ovarian syndrome (Artava Kshaya)” was conducted in 50 patients. They were selected on the basis of standard inclusion and exclusion criteria and randomly allocated to two different treatment groups; Group- A (Shatapushpa Taila Nasya) and Group- B (Shatapushpa Taila Matra Basti). Total duration of the treatment was of 3 months along with a follow up period of 30 days. Both the interventions were effective, but in overall improvement of the patients “Group A” had better results than “Group B”. For better scientific validation, further research studies and clinical trials should be carried out with large sample size and longer duration of treatment.

Keywords: Polycystic ovarian syndrome, Artava Kshaya, Shatapushpa Taila, Nasya, Matra Basti.
