Abstract

PHYTOSOMES AS NOVEL DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM

Navneet Kumar Verma*, Asheesh Kumar Singh, Aditya Maurya and Abhishek Barnwal

ABSTRACT

Phospholipids encase and bind hydrophilic, bioactive phytoconstituents found in herbs to form phytosomes, a new drug delivery mechanism. "Some" refers to something resembling a cell, and "phyto" indicates a plant. Phytosomes are tiny structures that resemble cells. This is a sophisticated herbal formulation that is surrounded and bound by a lipid and contains the bioactive phytoconstituents of the herb extract. It has enormous potential for use in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and medical fields. Technology has improved pharmacological and pharmacokinetic parameters. It has been determined to be both safe and effective, meaning that it may be beneficially utilised to treat a variety of illnesses in both humans and animals. Water-soluble substances like flavonoids, glycosides, and terpenoids of which flavonoids are a significant class make up the majority of the bioactive components of phytomedicine. These
substances have a wide range of therapeutic applications. Compared to standard herbal extracts with dosage forms, phytosomes exhibit superior absorption, bioavailability, and effects due to their water-soluble herbal extract and lipophilic outer layer. By adding polyphenolic compounds to phospholipid-based self-assembled delivery systems, or phytosomes, the low oral bioavailability of these compounds can be improved.

Keywords: Phytosomes, Phytoconstituents, Herbal Formulations, Herb Extract.
