A REVIEW ON PHARMACOLOGICAL AND NUTRACEUTICAL VALUE OF JOHA RICE: AN AROMATIC RICE OF ASSAM OF NORTHEAST INDIA

ABSTRACT
Due to the natural fragrance and nutraceutical value aromatic rice has greater demand in cuisines. Over centuries Joha rice, having distinctive aromatic endosperm is cultivated in Assam of Northeast India. Joha rice is therapeutically effective in hyperglycemia, arthritics, inflammation, microbial infection, and hyperlipidemia and hence is an effective nutraceutical of choice in various ailments. The rice hold promising pharmacological properties that need further clinical studies. In this paper, an attempt has been made to review the morphological, phytochemical, nutraceutical and pharmacological characteristics of traditionally cultivated aromatic rice. Findings of the present review would be a boon for developing Joha rice of Assam in future novel pharmaceutical formulation and to establish in the global scenario as
nutraceutical.
