A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF NILI (INDIGOFERA TINCTORIA LINN) FROM VARIOUS AYURVEDIC LEXICONS: A DETAILED REVIEW OF NIGHANTUS

ABSTRACT
Background: Nili (Indigofera tinctoria Linn.) is a perennial shrub belongs to the Fabaceae family. Traditionally Nili is used as a medicine for various diseases in India. Material & Method: All the available Nighantus were referred for gathering the data regarding Nili. Also, online articles, webpages and text were referred for this review. The e-Nighantu developed by National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage (NIIMH), Hyderabad, New Delhi was also referred for this review. Observation & Result: Referring various Nighantus in detail gives vital information about the Synonyms, Rasapanchaka, Karma (Action) and Rogaghnata (Indication) of Nili. Discussion: Various information of Nili is gathered from 23 different Nighantus. Till date no detailed review analysis from ayurvedic literatures has been carried out on Nili. Conclusion: From this review study, information is gathered regarding synonyms, properties and actions which may help in easy identification
of drug. Also, Nili can be explored in detail for the indications mentioned by conducting experimental and clinical study.
