REVIEW ARTICLE ON INTRA UTERINE GROWTH RESTRICTION(IUGR)

ABSTRACT
The Ultimate Aim of Obstetrics is healthy mother and fetus. Delivery of normal neonate depends upon various factors. Birth weight of a neonate is one of the Most important factor affecting neonatal morbidity and mortality. Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is one of the leading cause of LBW babies. It can be considered when the birth weight of the fetus is below 10th percentile of the average for the gestational age. IUGR affects about 10% of pregnancies and causes many Antepartum, Intrapartum, Postpartum complications in fetuses such as oligohydrominos, acidosis and RDS. According to ayurveda if a pregnant women does not follow the recommendations given in Ayurveda she may land up into many pregnancy related complications which are broadly categorised as “Garbhavyapada” and “Grbhaupadravas”. The signs and symptoms of IUGR and Upvishtaka are same. In Ayurveda Upvishtaka is described under Garbhavyapdas. Hence, an attempt was made through this study to review the concept of IUGR according to Ayurveda and Modern medicine.
