PHARMACEUTICO-ANALYTICAL PREPARATION OF KAJJALI BY CLASSICAL METHOD

Dr. Mamta Devi* and Dr. Ravneet Kaur Chahal

ABSTRACT

Background: Rasashastra is the branch of Indian alchemy which manages the scientific utilization of purified and processed metals, minerals, valuable stones, marine, narcotic, and different herbs for curing diseases and rejuvenation. Rasashastra, is always on the receiving end as many argue that rasayoga contain heavy metals which are toxic to human system. However, it is time and again proved scientifically that Rasayogas are efficacious and safe and well tolerated, by researchers of Ayurveda. Kajjali is a unique rasayoga which is prepared using parada and gandhaka. Kajjali has different varieties based on the ratio of parada and gandhaka and therapeutic uses of them differ accordingly. Kajjali is also used in the preparation of other rasayoga. Black sulfide of mercury (Kajjali) comprehensively and synergistically acts with the herbal ingredients to bring multitargeted organ effect, in particular, Rasayana effects in its complete sense. Aims and Objective: To prepare Kajjali classically and tested for organoleptic characters, Bhasma Pariksha, physiochemical and analytical characters were observed. Materials and Methods: In Rasashastra different references are available for the preparation of Kajjali. For the present study Samagunabalijarita Kajjali (equal parts of mercury and sulphur) were prepared as mentioned in classical book (Rasa Tarangini). Also Shodhana (purification) of mercury and purification sulphur was also carried out. Detailed observations and organoleptic characters were noted during the procedure. Results and Conclusion: Total quantity taken was- 111.86g and obtained quantity of Kajjali was-99.5 g. As per following the classical method explained in the text, the prepared Kajjali can pass the Bhasma Pariksha (alchemical tests), organoleptic characters explained in classics. It is a longer and time consuming method but it can be carried out which helps to prepare a therapeutically beneficial product.

Keywords: Parada, Gandhaka, Kajjali, Rasashastra, Samagunabalijarita, Rasa Tarangini, Shodhana, Pariksha, organoleptic characters.
