NUTRITION AND AGING: AN AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE

ABSTRACT
Introduction: This paper explores the relationship between nutrition and aging from an Ayurvedic perspective. Ayurveda provides insights into managing and slowing down the aging process using Rasayana remedies, emphasizing the importance of doshic balance and dietary practices aligned with Ayurvedic principles. Methods: The paper reviews Ayurvedic concepts such as dosha predominance in different life stages, the importance of nutrition for the elderly, and the impact of physiological changes on nutrient intake. It also discusses the concept of Dhatu Kshaya, which involves the gradual depletion of seven bodily tissues (Saptadhatu) with age. Emotional factors are
shown to influence digestive fire (Agni) and bodily tissues (Dhatus). Results: The paper explores Rasayana therapy, a core aspect of Ayurveda, focusing on dietary and herbal remedies to enhance the health of the seven bodily tissues, promoting longevity and disease prevention. It examines dietary substances for Dhatuposhana, encompassing plant-based and animal-based foods, as well as mineral-based supplements following classical methods. Discussion: The paper emphasizes Ayurvedic rules of dietary conduct and advocates for tailored dietary guidelines for the elderly, considering factors like individual constitution, diseases, and Agni capacity. These guidelines can address specific age-related diseases, enhancing overall well-being. Conclusion: Addressing the nutritional needs of the elderly is crucial, especially in regions with a significant geriatric population. Promoting proper nutrition and Ayurvedic principles can lead to healthier aging, disease preventionand improved well-being, even for those with limited resources. Proper nutrition, guided by Ayurvedic wisdom, is vital in managing and preventing age-related diseases while maintaining health in old age.
