ABSTRACT
Platelet rich plasma or PRP is gaining widespread recognition in field of dentistry for its non-invasive approach and cost effectiveness. This technique harnesses patient’s own blood to extract concentrated platelets which are then utilized in various dental treatments. PRP is considered non-invasive as it capitalizes on the body’s natural resources and doesn’t involve surgical intervention. It contains many growth factors that can help in wound healing, skin rejuvenation, scar improvement and tissue regeneration and has shown promising results in many oral surgical procedures like third molar extractions,
periodontal surgeries, implantology etc. Furthermore, it has also been proved to help in treating conditions such as oral lichen planus and Bisphosphonates induced osteonecrosis of the jaw (BIONJ). In addition to this PRP has a benefit over many other available treatment options since it is obtained from patients own blood thus diminishing the possibilities of any immunological reactions. Therefore, the objective of this review is to concentrate on the advantages of platelet-rich plasma across various applications and the innovations it brings to the field of dentistry.
Keywords: Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), Lichen planus (LP), Periodontitis, Implants, Bisphosphonates induced osteonecrosis of the jaw (BIONJ), guided tissue regeneration (GTR).
