ABSTRACT
Saraca indica, commonly known as the Ashoka tree, has a long history of use in traditional medicinal systems, particularly in Ayurveda, for a variety of health-related issues. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the plant, focusing on its traditional uses, phytochemistry, and the pharmacological properties underlined by modern scientific research. Saraca indica's therapeutic utility is primarily attributed to its rich phytochemical profile, including flavonoids, tannins, saponins, glycosides, alkaloids, phenols, and sterols. This array of bioactive compounds has been linked to several pharmacological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, and neuroprotective effects. Notably, Saraca indica also plays a significant role in women's health, with evidence supporting its use in managing menstrual disorders and as a uterine tonic. Scientific research, including in-vitro and in-vivo studies, has begun to validate many of the traditional uses of Saraca indica and suggest potential new therapeutic applications. However, further research, including clinical trials in humans, is needed to fully elucidate the plant's medicinal potential and establish the safety and efficacy of Saraca indica-based treatments. This review underscores the significant therapeutic potential of Saraca indica, emphasizing the importance of integrating traditional knowledge with modern scientific methods to develop effective and innovative treatments. Furthermore, it highlights the need for sustainable cultivation and conservation practices to preserve this valuable medicinal resource for future generations.
