Mansi Bhosale*, Dr. Pramodkumar Shirote and Dr. Vishal Yadav

ABSTRACT

Gastroretentive drug delivery systems (GRDDS) have received significant interest in the past few decades as they can overcome several drawbacks associated with most of the conventional and controlled release drug delivery systems particularly fast gastricemptying time and non-site specificity for the drugs administered orally. Taking medication through mouth is the preferable way compared to others, because of easiness in taking medication and compliance of patients. Limited gastric residence time is the limitation of taking medication orally. In order to increase this gastric retention time, several approaches have been proposed one of them is raft forming system which are useful approach to increase in the retention time of the drug delivery systems for more than 12 hr. This article focuses on overview of raft system including introduction, advantages, marketed formulations etc. It can be concluded that raft floating dosage forms serve the best system as compared to other gastroretentive approach in the treatment of diseases related to the GIT.
