EFFECT OF SIRAVEDHA IN VARICOSE VEIN – A CASE STUDY

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Varicose veins is becoming a day to day problem particularly in middle aged and elderly people claiming considerable portion of national economy because of longtime hospital stay of the patient or high costs of treatments, medical or surgical. Certain jobs demand prolonged standing as in bus conductors, policemen and the persons involved in these jobs often suffer from varicose veins. Varicose vein can be compared to Sirajgranthi as described in Ayurvedic texts. Siravedha (venesection) a type of bloodletting, is indicated for varicose vein in Ayurveda. Effects of siravedha manifests at multiple levels from the blood hemodynamics to the Quality of Life
of varicose vein patients. Present case study was planned to understand the effect of siravedha in varicose vein in terms of all the available subjective and objective parameters which will give a better understanding on the effect of siravedha. Material and method: This is a case presentation of a 57 years old male patient with history of varicose veins, having complaints of Elongated, Prominent, dilated and torturous, hard vein below left knee joint at the posterior aspect i.e. above calf muscle over left foreleg since 2 years. Patient came in the outpatient department of Shalya Tantra department of PLRD Hospital, VYDS Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya, Khurja. Written informed consent was obtained from patient. Siravedha was done on affected leg. Observation and result: The patient got relief in all symptoms with appreciable change in blackish discoloration of leg, pain, cramps, tortuous swelling over left leg, Conclusion: Siravedha management with Ayurved principle provides significant relief and improves quality of life of patient. It may possible to treat this disease with satisfaction with the help of Siravedha.
