ROLE OF SHODHANA AND SHAMANA CHIKITSA IN WEST SYNDROME - A CASE STUDY

ABSTRACT
Ayurveda has always stood as a ray of hope in many diseases, especially when patients have got limitations of treatment from Allopathy practitioners. West syndrome is one of such conditions which is defines as a triad of Seizures, EEG abnormalities and mental retardation. It is often associated with structural etiologies like Perinatal insults or genetic causes.[1] Patients responds to steroids, AEDs and vigabatrin[2] for controlling seizures and EEG changes. But spasticity, cognitive dysfunction and global developmental delay remain the issues that affect day to day life of child as well as parents.
According to Ayurveda, Stambha, Sankocha, Aakshepaka are the signs of vitiated vaat dosha.[3] Thus vata shodhana and shamana chikitsa as well as use of medhya drugs may prove helpful in the treatment of these patients. In our study a 2 years male child, known case of West syndrome was given Ayurvedic treatment for 2 months. Results throughout course were encouraging and helpful to strengthen the belief in our ancient texts.
