Abstract

LITERARY REVIEW ON AYURVEDIC TREATMENT OF SITAPITTA W.S.R. TO URTICARIA.

Dr. Debaleena Acharjee* and Dr. Deepak Thorat

ABSTRACT

Vata and Kapha doshas are primarily vitiated and mixed with pitta they spread both internally and externally and resulting in conditions named „Sitapitta-Udarda-Kotha‟. Sita pitta (Urticaria) is a disease caused due to vitiation of all three doshas, which manifests on the skin keeping blood (Rakta dhatu) as its base & characterized by itchy bumps, raised & dark red skin rash. Shitapitta manifests due to exposure to a cold environment, consumption of various poisonous materials (allergens), and intake of an unwholesome diet and regimen. Modern medical science describes urticaria as hives that occur due to a hypersensitive allergic trigger. The histamine and chemicals present result in inflammation and fluid accumulation under the skin, causing wheals. There is no specific and no satisfactory treatment in modern medical literature for this condition, but it can be effectively cured and controlled through Ayurveda. Ayurvedic treatment of sitapitta mainly involves the pacification of vitiated doshas and detoxification of the body using medication and purification therapy. In this work, an attempt is made by me to collect the details of various Ayurvedic formulations mentioned in various Ayurvedic treatises used in the management of Sitapitta. The method adopted is a review of literature done using print and digital media. Here in this paper an Attempt is made to analyse the mode of action of these formulations based on their ingredients and efficacy.

Keywords: Sitapitta, Urticaria, Dosha, Tridosha, wheals, hives.
