ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia, and often associated with complication such as hyperlipidemia. This study aimed to evaluate the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of hydroethanolic stem bark extract of Boswellia dalzielii in alloxan-induced diabetes in rats. Diabetes was induced in male Wistar rats by single intraperitoneal injection of alloxan (150 mg/kg, b.w). Diabetic rats were divided into 5 groups of 6 rats each and were treated with either distilled water, Boswellia dalzielii extract (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg) or glibenclamide (10 mg/kg) while the normal group of rats was given distilled water. Treatments were administered daily to the animals orally for 3 weeks. Then, blood glucose levels, oral glucose tolerance test, lipid profiles and body weight were evaluated. Administration of Boswellia dalzielii extract exhibited hypoglicemic effect by reducing fasting blood glucose level at the dose-dependent manner and enhancing the glucose tolerance. Moreover, the extract showed an hypolipidemic activity by normalizing the lipid abnormalities. These data suggest that hydroethanolic stem bark extract of Boswellia dalzielii shows potential results in the treatment of hypoglycemia and hypolipidemia and could be a useful source of an antidiabetic agent.
