Raghad Alhalabi*, Marah Alhalabi, Sarah Alobaid, Lamees Ramadan and Jumana Saleh

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Homocysteine elevation was described as a risk factor for recurrent pregnancy loss, it may be caused by gene polymorphism like MHTFR C677T. The aim of paper is to study the prevalence of homocysteinemia, and the prevalence of MTHFR gene mutation and the relationship between those two factors and recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) in a group of Syrian women. Methods: A case control study, the study cases composed 100 women that suffered recurrent pregnancy loss compared to 100 women in the control group. Results: The prevalence of homocysteinemia was higher in women with RPL (36%) compared to the control group (17%) (p<0.003), moreover, 58% of women with RPL had heterozygous MTHFR C677T mutation compared with 61% in the control group with no statistical difference (p=0.773). The homozygous MTHFR C677T mutation was observed in 4 women with RPL compared with no case in the control group (p=0.135). Conclusion: The results of this study add more evidence about the relation between homocysteinemia and RPL, homocysteine regulation may add positive value on continuing with the pregnancy.
