Shaik Saddam Hussain*, M. Giresh, P. Sasikala and R. P. Sanghavi

ABSTRACT

Cardiovascular diseases remain the biggest cause of death worldwide. According to estimates in a report by the WHO in 2011, approximately 17.1 million people die of CVDs each year, representing 30% of all deaths. The aim of the study is to determine the drug related problems aroused in patients with cardiovascular disease. The study was conducted for six months in a tertiary care hospital. In this study 180 patients with the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases visited the cardiology department during the six months in which data was collected. Prescriptions of all 180 patients were analyzed and the following demographic details were obtained. In our study male patients (72%) were more comparing with females (28%). In our study smoking and alcoholic were also considered. In this study, individuals with drug related problems of cardiovascular diseases, it was found that males were found to be more when compared with females due to risk factors such as smoking, alcoholism, life style etc. the drug related problems were high in patients aged between 56-65 years because of their multiple co morbid conditions. Out of 180 patients, ADRs are found in 25 patients. Out of 180 patients, drug interactions were found in 15 patients. An additional step should be taken to determine the cause of the patient’s symptoms and whether they can be attributed to the use of a drug. Regular review of the patient’s drug therapy by a clinical pharmacist can positively influence the patient outcomes and quality of care.

Keywords: Cardiovascular diseases, ADRs, drug interactions, patient’s drug therapy.
