Sweta R. Prajapati* and D. B. Vaghela

ABSTRACT

Background: Vataja Pratishyaya is one among the 31 Nasaroga mentioned by Acharya Sushruta in Ayurvedic classics. On the basis of the symptoms Vataja Pratishyaya can be correlate with allergic rhinitis. The inflammatory condition known as allergic rhinitis, which is mediated by the immunoglobulin E, is brought on by hypersensitivity reactions to certain allergens that are either seasonal or perennial. The prevalence of allergic rhinitis is approx. 40% in adults globally. Symptoms of allergic rhinitis causes irritability and affects daily life routine too. Complications of allergic rhinitis include recurrent sinusitis, nasal polyp, bronchial asthma etc. Recurrence of the disease is the main drawback of the modern medications for allergic rhinitis. The increasing prevalence and recurrence rate led us to find a cure for the disease. As Ayurveda is known for its removal of disease from its roots, the present study was planned to find good choice of treatment for allergic rhinitis. Materials and Methods: A 24 years old female patient came to the ENT OPD, ITRA, Jamnagar with the complaints of watery discharge from nose, sneezing (8-10 at a time), nasal blockage at night and headache since last 3 year. Local treatment like Marshanasya with Anutaila, Nasapichu with Balataila along with oral medications like Hingvashtaka Churna, Dashmula Kwatha with Eranda Taila and Sitopaladi Churna was given to the patient for 1 month. Result: Patient showed Gradual improvement in symptoms over a period of 14 days. Along with proper Pathya- Apathya Paalana about 95% relief in the symptoms were achieved within 1 month. Conclusion: The patient's quality of life is being hampered by Vataja Prathishyaya, which affects the Urdhwajatru, particularly Nasa. Local as well as oral therapy selected here are of Vata-Kapha hara in nature and having anti-inflammatory and antiallergic property hence it has shown marked improvement. It shows that the Ayurvedic treatment protocol described by Acharya Sushruta is a good choice of intervention for the management of Vataja Pratishyaya (Allergic Rhinitis).
