Dr. Monika*, Dr. Renu B. Rathi and Dr. Deepthi Balakrishnana

ABSTRACT

Introduction- Cow ghee is considered as best among all Ghrita in Charaka Samhita. Pratishyaya (Rhinitis) is a Nasagata Vyadhi (Nasal disorder) prevalent among Indian population. Cow ghee-based formulations mentioned in ayurveda classics for nasal disorders are not compiled yet. And very few of them are in reach to the patients. Aim-To prepare thorough review of cow ghee-based medicated formulations mentioned in the treatment of nasal disorders in ayurveda classics. Objectives- To analyse relevance and importance of cow ghee-based formulations. Methodology- Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanaga Sangraha, Ashtanga Hridayam, Kashyapa Samhita, Bhava Prakasha, Bhaishajya Ratnavali and Rasratna Samuchhya were reviewed for cow ghee-based formulations mentioned in Nasagata Vyadhis (nasal disorders). The formulations were compiled and analysed according to their route of administration and availability in the market. Results-Total forty-eight cow ghee medicated formulations were found out of which twenty-six formulations were mentioned for oral use and rest twenty-two formulations are for nasal/external administration. Use of only cow ghee is also described for oral as well as external use. Only three formulations are available in the market. Discussion- Cow ghee is a natural antioxidant, immunomodulator and a suitable carrier for herbs which are absorbed and transported to target areas. Hence, Cow ghee based herbal formulations are beneficial over oil based nasal drops used in conventional system of medicine but still only six percent mentioned formulations are available in the market. Rest of ninety four percent formulations are still unexplored. So, there is huge scope to explore these formulations in nasal disorders. Conclusion- Cow ghee-based formulations for nasal disorders are not explored yet. No any research work has been done regarding efficacy of these formulations. Cow ghee based herbal nasal drops and Dhoomvarti (Medicated herbal stick) preparation is need of the time over conventional nasal drops and sprays.
