Abstract

‘AN ETIOPATHOLOGICAL STUDY OF KAMALA W.S.R. TO JAUNDICE’- A LITERARY REVIEW

ABSTRACT

Ayurveda offers a detailed description of swatthavritta as well as how to cure various ailments. This review article deals with the etiopathological study of Kamala w,s,r, to jaundice. Ayurveda considers Jaundice (Kamala) as a disorder of raktavahastrotas. Yakrit and pleeha are moolasthana of raktavahastrotas. Vitiated Pitta is the main causative factor in the pathogenesis of kamala. As per Modern View the human liver contains complex parenchymal cells that perform multiple functions which are essential for life. The liver does not easily demonstrate dysfunction at least in its metabolic activities. Nidana (Cause), Rupa (Symptoms), Samprapti (Pathogenesis) and Sadhya-Asadhyata (Prognosis) has been illustrated in accordance with Ayurvedic classics. Yellow discoloration of eye, skin etc. signals the onset of this disease Kamala which is correlated with disease of biliary system in general and jaundice in particular. Unconjugated and conjugated hyperbilirubinemia is just compatible with Koshthashrita and Shakhashrita Kamala respectively. Proper understanding of Samprapti (pathogenesis) is very much essential to plan a suitable line of treatment based on the Samprapti Vighatana to get maximum results in a short period without damaging system.
