ABSTRACT

Oral route of drug administration is the most convenient and acceptable route gaining more patient acceptance. The present study is conducted with the aim to formulate and evaluate the medicated soft jelly containing ascorbic acid. The jelly dosage form can be swallowed easily without water and are soft and smooth. These formulations offer rapid dissolution and absorption of drugs through oral mucosa therefore show the early onset of action. The medicated jelly of ascorbic acid was prepared and evaluated for physical characteristics, weight variation, syneresis, pH, taste and palatability, drug content, release rate characteristics and stability studies. All the jellies were found to have patient welcoming taste and were palatable. All formulations showed more than 50% drug release within 20 minutes, while 98.52% drug was released in 30 minutes. The results of release kinetics showed that the formulation followed the zero order release kinetics. The drug content of F1-F6 formulations was found to be in the range of 88.12 to 98.52 %, The formulation F2 shows 98.52% drug release. The best way to solve these problems are formulating a paediatric friendly dosage form which will be more acceptable among children in its taste, smell, colour, texture. It has estimated that about 50% of population has problem of swallowing tablets especially paediatrics and geriatrics.

Keywords: Jelly, Ascorbic Acid.
