ABSTRACT

The resistance of bacteria towards antibiotics is increasing throughout the world. Development of multi drug resistance, formation of biofilm by the organism, increasing prevalence of drug abuse makes it possible to develop alternative antibiotic treatment for effective antibacterial activity against organisms. Graphene and graphene based materials at nano-size itself act as a potent antibacterial agent by various mechanisms and also shows synergistic antibacterial activity when it is in the form of functionalized nano-composites activated by light irradiation. This paper reviews the use and investigated the mechanisms of functionalized graphene quantum dot (GQD) nano-composites as a potent antibacterial agent against various gram positive and gram negative bacteria by producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) will induce oxidative stress damaging the cell membranes and cell walls of the organism leading to cytoplasmic leakage and cell death. Graphene and graphene based materials kill organisms by producing free radicals, interfering with protein production and inhibiting cell proliferation by binding with nuclei materials that lead to cell death.
