Abstract

Dr. Jyoti Charan* and Dr. D. B. Vaghela

ABSTRACT

 Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is the common problem occurring due to the instability of tear film which leads to major complications if not treated in time.  Conditions like reduced quantity of tear production and alteration of normal tear film composition can lead to a lot of problems like burning sensation, foreign body sensation, feeling of dryness etc.  In Ayurveda the disease Shushkakashipaka is very similar to Dry eye syndrome in modern. “यत् कुणितं दारुिरूऺवर्त्म ववलोकने चाववलदर्मनं यत् | सुदारुिं यत् प्रततबोधेन च र्ुष्काक्षऺऩकोऩहतं तदक्षऺ ||” (सु.उ .६/२६)  The Shushkashipaka is a disease which is characterized by the Paka of Akshi (eye) due to Sushkata caused by altered coherence of Ashru with ocular surface or lack of Ashru. This disease is also characterized by difficulty in the eye lid movement and blurred vision due to excessive vitiation of Vata.  This patient was treated with Sunthyadi Aschyotan and internally Mahatriphlaadi Ghrita.
