Abstract

IN-VITRO ANTI-ARTHRITICS AND ANTI-INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITY OF HYPTIS SUAVEOLENS

S. A. Vadivel* and Dr. M. R. Elayaraja

ABSTRACT

The hyptis suaveolens belongs to the lamiaceae family, it is high branching annual herb growing 50 cm and 2m in disturbed areas. It produced a lots of seeds up to 3000 seeds per square metre in dense infestations, quickly establishing persistent propagule banks, so it is easily available in india. It is use to several medicinal purpose. Our present work, the whole plant of Hyptis suaveolens is extracted in various concentrations by using pet ether (soxhlet apparatus). And the prepared extracts are subjected to phytochemical screening showed the presence of Alkaloids, Tannins, phenolic, Flavonoids, Saponins, terpenoids. Then it is subjected for anti-arthritics & anti-inflammatory activity by in-vitro method. The anti-arthritic activity was determined using the denaturation paradigm for bovine serum albumin. Comparing the pet ether extract (44.51%) to standard diclofenac sodium (31.44%) at 2000 g/mL, the pet ether extract showed excellent arthritic activity. By restoring the stability of degraded red blood cells, the extract (99.10%) showed excellent anti-inflammatory activity compared to diclofenac sodium (73.80%) at 2000g/mL. In both paradigms, increasing the concentration of the extract increases its ability to inhibit methanol degradation of bovine albumin and human red blood cells.

Keywords: hyptis suaveolens, anti-arthritics, anti-inflammatory, pet ether.
