ABSTRACT

Type 2 diabetes increases the risk of certain diseases, including cardiovascular disease, eye and blindness problems, amputation of the lower limbs, kidney disease and infectious diseases. Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (E.coli) (UPEC) is the dominant infectious agent in both uncomplicated and complicated UTIs. Also, UTI increase with ageing. Diabetes can contribute to greater risk of UTI. Aim of this study was to find out if any correlation exists between these two diseases based on the clinical parameters. Prescription analysis & cost of illness analysis was also done to understand the difference in UTI patients with Diabetes & without diabetes. The six months prospective observational study was done in the urology department of a tertiary care hospital in Tamilnadu. DM increases the risk of UTI. Contraceptive methods, Catheters & menopause impact UTI. The cost of illness analysis revealed that UTI added to the cost of management of DM and if proper screening was done, the risk of experiencing the pain and its treatment cost can also be saved.
